Sindoh Art Space opens a solo exhibition titled “Sunset and Its Beyond” by Korean artist Pyo Heui-sun. This is a special invitational exhibition celebrating the 61st anniversary of Sindoh’s foundation.
The connection between artist Pyo and the company is special since he worked at Sindoh, for about 35 years from 1980 to 2015.
Through the theme “sunset,” the artist after retirement sought to express his sentiment and aesthetics through the time of the day when the sun sets.
Though the exhibition opens as an internal event without invitations to guests to prevent the spread of COVID-19, artworks by former Sindoh president-turned-artist Pyo Heui-sun are expected to be regarded as warm greetings and wisdom to the employees at Sindoh.
On Clear Days, the Sunset is not so Beautiful.
In <Sunset, Beyond>, artist Pyo Heui-sun finishes her busy active time and presents various works comparing the beginning of the second act of his life, retirement, to sunset. This exhibition goes beyond simple photography and reflects the life of the artist, his thoughts after retirement, and a new life.
He left this article about the work on display this time.
|On Clear Days, the Sunset is not so Beautiful.
If one’s life was a day, what time of the day would be retirement from one’s career? The time of birth for a child coming out of the dark womb to see the light of the world would be the sunrise.
Growing up and learning to fulfill the duties of a grownup would have been finished in the morning, and active social life carrying out his role, perhaps by afternoon. Just like office workers heading home after work, by the time the sun sets, man would retire from his career. Come to think of it, retirement and sunset share some similarities. First of all, if the time of sunrise, out of 24 hours, would be the time for us to start the day, the time of sunset allows relatively many hours to spend. In his life of one hundred years as they say these days, man has many years to spend even after his retirement before ending his life. Just like a sunset that slowly invites darkness during which he sorts things through and prepares for the next day, retirement might be a precious gift to us through which we reminisce our past strewn with things we had not known then before coming to a close in life.
The beauty of a sunset can be determined by the weather in the afternoon before the sun sets. A clear day often does not end with the most beautiful sunset. For the sunset to be beautiful, the sky must be strewn with some clouds reflecting the light like a prism. In our life, too, will some of us who charged forward through the hard path of retirement, as if clouded by hardships, be able to relish the beauty of a sunset? What kind of sunset will you see toward the end of your day?

They say recreating nature can be called “cultural content,” and a fundamental act of creation is to return to nature. If so, in photography, what can be called an act of art, by taking how and what subject matters? Out of countless subject matters used in photography, scenes of the sun setting have continuously been taken by many photographers to this day. To the people who calmly ended their day gazing at the setting sun above the sea in the west, or to the people who were lost in thought watching the sun hiding behind the high peak, an act of recording the sight of the setting sun via photography might have been their artistic endeavor to look back on their life, cherish their memories, and nurture energy to start new days.
Would people prefer the scenery of the sun rising? Or of the sun setting? The sun rising in the twilight at the crack of dawn looks brilliant and dynamic. As the sun quickly brightens to turn into daylight, we somewhat feel a sense of loss. On the contrary, the slowly setting sun calms and comforts us as its lasting moment makes us feel a sense of serene, philosophical depth. The exhibition presents photographs taken by Pyo Hee-seon, who observed the setting sun nearly every day from an apartment in the city center of Seoul and painted the sun through his viewpoints and colors, unique and not so light.
“Since I was told he was learning photography after retirement, I thought he would go around in search of beautiful landscapes, and I’ve often seen such people. That wasn’t it. Every evening, he looked out the window of his apartment veranda and took photographs,” said Pyo’s wife, who fully supported Pyo’s photography. It appears that the artist, in his mid-60s, started a second life after retirement from a lifetime of career and wanted to return to his youth to live the epoch to the fullest. His views, contemplative at first, turned into an epic consisting of the pattern of thesis-antithesis-synthesis in magenta and cyan—a song of hope to live new days.
Artist Pyo Heui-sun deserves respect for his artistic effort to make his images speak for themselves along with his hope for tomorrow, bright and healthy, beyond the setting sun.
